TWO BIRTHDAYS AT ONCE!

Have you ever tried to make a swirled cake for two people at once? Well its not very hard, but making it for two people- now that’s a whole other story! My mom and brother have birthdays one day apart and I am the one who makes the cakes in the family. So think about it... getting two cards, two presents and making a cake, now that takes skill. But I did it last year and I can do it again. So for the cake, I made it chocolate and vanilla! That wasn’t the hard part.  The hard part was decorating it one side for my mom and the other for my brother. So I had to ask my mom her favorite flavor of cake and her favorite thing to do, see, or go to and since my brother was at collage I had to guess for him! After I had the idea in my head it was time to put it on the cake. It was going to have one side a field with flowers and grass and the other side was going to have a beach with water and a wave. The hardest part was the grass because it took so much frosting. I had to ask my mom to make more before I was even done with the grass! Once I was done with the field I had to make the beach.  That was fun because I had to go back and forth and back and forth. After I got done covering the sides and top with water it was time to make the wave. The wave would not stand up! Somehow I got it to stand and when I did I did not touch it! After that I did the sand.  That was the funnest part of the entire cake. I made the sand by taking a handful of brown sugar and sprinkling it all around the other half. After that I was done and it was on to my brothers present witch was the left over cake batter that we baked. For that cake I was going to make it look like a wrapped present (my grandma gave me that idea.) It was red on the background with green ribbon. When I gave it to him I told him that he could bring it back to collage for him and his roommates to share.( it also got me some advertisement.) The next day we brought the cake up to my mom and brother they loved it!  We ate it with coffee and mint ice-cream and it was really really good!

                                                                     THE END

Hoping to meet Cake Boss

Cake boss is one of my very favorite shows.  In fact, I love it so much that my parents got me tickets to see Cake Boss for my birthday in July but the show is really in November! When I opened that envelope with the tickets in there I was SOOOO exited. I have been counting down days ever since July!  it has been exactly a month and I still cant wait. I have no idea what Buddy is going to do at the show but I know it is going to be amazing. When I found out I was going to see Buddy I wrote him a letter telling him how I won first place in the Kentucky State Fair and told him if he wants more details about my cake then he is just going to have to go to my blog! I really hope I get to meet him someday and I really want to be a baker someday just like him!

My First Place Fair Cake

I recently entered a cake in the Kentucky state fair and won first place! The theme
Was money so I did a money tree. It had green fondant formed around a Styrofoam
Base and a small dowel in the middle to keep the tree up.

The inside of the trunk was formed by a peanut butter granola bar to give it shape and texture.

Once I had the base formed, I rolled chocolate fondant for the outside of the tree.

The next thing I worked on was the books. For the books I rolled colored fondant out and cut them into rectangles. Then I made thick white rectangles and put them inside the colored fondant to make the pages of the books.
Around the base of the cake I made rocks out of fondant and stuck them on using royal icing which hardens really hard. Then I made the coins out of yellow fondant and cut them out using a dot tip. I soaked them in gold food coloring. Then I put them all around the cake.
I used a brick wall mold to shape the fondant for the dollar bill leaves. I rolled it out really thin and cut them out.  Then I used a food coloring  marker to make them look like money.

In order to stick the dollars to the branches I melted chocolate and stuck them on to the branches. The branches where made out of wire in the middle and chocolate fondant on the outside. And then the cake was all done but there was one more thing…we had to get it to the fair. While we were in the car to drop it off it was such a hot day that the chocolate that was keeping the branches and leaves up was starting to melt. But it was a good thing that we decided to put the cake in a laundry basket to carry it to the fair!  The sides were just right so I could rest my hands on it.

When the 18th came we were right  there at the fair and when we saw that blue ribbon, I knew it was all worth it.

I want to say a special "THANK YOU" to Mrs. Hack for teaching me how to do all these things.  I had not really used fondant before and she taught me how to do this.  She is a really good teacher and she makes amazing cakes!

Pictures of cakes I have recently made

This was my very first cake.  I used a star candle that was on a little stick.  I know this looks like it is for right now (Christmas) but I actually made it in September!

This was actually my next real cake.  This was the practice cake for the cake decorating contest that was part of the cake decorating class I took at Woodland Enrichment Program.  I brought this cake to my Gram's church supper.  Notice the roses?  I made the grass using a confetti tip.

This is me with my "First Place Winning Cake".  Notice the first place necklace!  I made a cake with autumn leaves, a rake, grass and a fence.  Everyone else made a cake with roses, or a rainbow or Wizard of Oz...but I wanted to show how you can mix colors as you decorate so my leaves had green, red, orange and yellow in them.  I also made a little pile of cake and covered it with these leaves.  If you look closely there is one rose on the side and a rake on the top.

This is the cake I made for my mom and my brother for their birthday.  It had roses and pansies on it.
I hope you enjoyed seeing some of the cakes I've been making.
